ART! 52 project!
Yes! I am alive and lazy! I see it's been five months since I posted about my 52 art project. I better get cracking to get #27-52 up before the end of the year. Please expect to see stuff over the next two weeks.
I was in two art shows this year and have another four that I intend to enter...let's see if that happens. Also, I found out about a coffee shop in mid-town that is looking for artists to show their work (AND SELL IT)! So, Let's get going!!!!

MOCAD
As you may know, I left my teaching career last year. It took several months to figure out what the next step in my life would be. I landed on art. With the experience of photographing weddings and fine art with Ron Warren Photography, I felt this was a good choice. I started painting and going to galleries. Ron and I entered photographs in a couple of Call For Entries and made it into two shows this year so far. In April, we were in the Lawrence Street Gallery's "Exposure '11" in Ferndale and in August, we were featured in the "Roots of Detroit Show" in Farmington. Applying for various art type jobs has rendered no results thus far. So, in order to work my way into the field. I applied for an internship at MOCAD the Museum of Contemporary Arts Detroit.
A new-ish museum, it is only five years old. So, this fall, I will be assisting the Educational Director and helping out with show openings, family day activities and whatever else is needed from September-December. So, adventure, here I come!!!
~D
P.S. For all of you who haven't been there yet, it's in mid-town, about three blocks south of Warren - five blocks south of the DIA -Detroit Institute of Arts. Within walking distance is the N'namdi Gallery, DAM - Detroit Artist Market, and the new 71 Pop.

Jother Woods and More Photos to Come
Hello friends and followers!
August sure has been a busy month! I am working two part-time jobs and doing more portrait photography. Also helping promote Ron Warren Photography.
Within the next week, I will post some more fine art pieces as well as some of the portraits I've done. Wonderful weather for Katie and Kara's photo shoots this past week. Learning some new off-camera lighting techniques that I still need to perfect. Always looking for more free seminars and webinars. So shoot some links to me!
I do want to share with you, in case you haven't been over there lately, Ron's photo blog. Yesterday, we were in Midtown Detroit and met Jother Woods, an artist who uses all recycled materials. You need to head down to the N'namdi Gallery behind the Chicken Shack on Forest (east of Woodward) to see his work and hear his stories. Fabulous! The show "Homeland" only runs until September 10th, 2011.

I'm Picking out a Thermos For You...
OK, Well, I'm not really picking out a thermos for you...I am picking out my photos for the "Roots in Detroit" Exhibit which is coming up in a couple of weeks. 15 Days to be precise. So, I know I haven't uploaded all of my photos that are potentially going into the show. But I currently have 82 in mind. Do you have a favorite? Let me know on the comment section and I will try and get that printed as well for this show.
"Ghost of Future Detroit" is my honorable mention in the show and the sponsors have provided us with a bit 24"x36" print of our winning images. There are 11 artists featured in this show. Ron beat me by getting second place in the show! Isn't that great? His image, "Metro Gothic" will be featured too.
In case you haven't penciled it in yet, I would like to invite you to the Historic Farmington Winery at 31505 Grand River Avenue, Farmington, MI 48336 on August 13th from 6-9pm. Check out the Event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=156192427787371
OK, here's the song for you...

Getting out for the Royal Oak Photography Meetup this past week got me some interesting shots...although they are not all macro photography, which the meetup was all about, I shot a whole range of stuff. I think some of it will be in the Roots of Detroit Exhibit on August 13, 2011. This will be the beginning of my bike theme.

Roots in Detroit Date Announced!
Happy Fourth of July everyone! I am sorry I've been lax in my upkeep of this blog. I have been shooting and painting a little. The paintings seem unfinished, so they may make an appearance later this year.
Ron and I did a lot of shooting this weekend with the Royal Oak Photography Meetup Group, and we need to get more work for our upcoming "Roots in Detroit" Exhibit. The two of us, along with 9 other photographers will be showing our work in August. SAVE THE DATE!
At the Historic Farmington Winery
Saturday, August 13, 2011 6:00pm
One of the cool things about this is the organizer for the Royal Oak Meetup group is also a finalist in this competition! Check out her work as well as the other winning artists on the Roots in Detroit facebook photo page by clicking here.

Rust Belt Market Opening
This weekend, The Rust Belt Market opens at 9 & Woodward! This is similar to the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit. Both offer local artists a space to create and sell their work. Today, there was an article in the FREEP. Also, theFerndale Patch has been following this and other local news.
So check it out Saturday and Sunday (May 7-8) from 11am - 7 pm (metered parking in Ferndale runs 25cents/ mins or 30 mins...I don't recall).

Snowy Tax Day! I was inspired to photograph a statue that I missed out on the day I shot "Ghost of Future Detroit". That will be on this blog soon. So, after driving around town looking for more snow art to shoot, I found Tyree Guyton's latest project (he also did the Heidelberg Project). Take a look at this link for more info about his "Street Folk".
My shot, Ron's processing...so cool. We work so well together. (toot toot).

gonna stray...
Going to stray from one type of art today, to another.
Heath Lowrance's book, The Bastard Hand, is now available to order!
On Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bastard-Hand-Heath-Lowrance/dp/0982843623/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1300314363&sr=1-1
And at Barnes and Noble.com : http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Bastard-Hand/Heath-Lowrance/e/9780982843628/?itm=1&USRI=heath+lowrance
This is Heath's debut published novel (and, ahem, I designed the cover!) and it is a terrific, pulpy story w/ a bit of a speculative edge.
Synopsis (from B&N site):
Charlie Wesley is not right in the head. He's escaped from a mental hospital up north and hitchhiked his way south, the voice of his dead brother urging him on. But when Charlie hits Memphis, the fine line between his delusions and reality shift in the form of the Reverend Phineas Childe-a preacher bent on booze and women; a Man of God with a dark agenda. Charlie is the perfect pawn in the Reverend's game of retribution. And the small North Mississippi town of Cuba Landing will be the setting for the Reverend's very personal Apocalypse. . . .
Oh, and see the youtube book trailer here (with original music by Nat Pike):

I ordered mine last night. Can't wait to re-read and get the ol' boy to sign it!

Just finished working with Heath Lowrance and Nat Pike on this terrific book trailer for Heath's upcoming novel, The Bastard Hand, available March 20 via New Pulp Press. Heath did the voiceover, Nat provided original music in the vein of N. Mississippi Blues, and I've got my hand in the mix a bit, too.
Now get ready to buy the book come March 20th! www.newpulppress.com!
